Our Mission

The mission of Boundless Brilliance is to educate, empower, and engage students in order to close the gender gap in STEM fields.

Our Vision

We envision a future of STEM leadership that is as diverse as the world in which we live.

Brilliance
/ˈbrilyəns/ Noun: exceptional talent or intelligence, vividness of color.

We define “Brilliance” as every child, student, and scientist tapping into the greatness that exists inside of them. Brilliance also implies that our talents and skills are shared to those around us.

Boundless:
/ˈboun(d)ləs/ Adjective: unlimited or immense.

A “Boundless” approach to STEM recognizes that there are no limits to what we can imagine and achieve, and that there is room for all within the STEM workforce. We believe our talents, passions, abilities, and futures are truly infinite and limitless. As an organization, we support all efforts to build a STEM workforce as diverse as the world that we live in.

Our Story

Boundless Brilliance was founded in 2017 by three female undergraduate students majoring in STEM at Occidental College after reading a study in Science Magazine which concluded that by age six, girls identify intelligence as a predominantly male trait. The founders were shocked by this finding and knew they needed to take immediate action. As women pursuing degrees in biochemistry, mathematics, and environmental biology, they recognized on a daily basis the tendency for their female peers to avoid raising their hands during lectures, and to minimize their successes in the lab and workplace; along with the fact that males made up the vast majority of the students in their classes.

In addition to their roles as full-time students, the founders inspired a robust team of over 200 volunteers, and built a successful program that reached over 7,000 elementary schoolers. Today, the founders are in medical school, grad school, and working at a tech start-up.

Our Values

Bold Leadership

Be ambitious, courageous and take your seat at the table. Be confident in your abilities and trust your team. Be discontent with business as usual and speak up. Recognize the uncomfortable and unsatisfying aspects of your role and take action to make improvements for future generations. Strive for authenticity over perfection.

Kindness in Action

Never miss an opportunity to show someone kindness and view all situations with empathy.

Excellence

Expect excellence, deliver excellence. Create high quality curriculum and content, invest in your trainings, and see to it that you are proud of your work- while being mindful of your resources. Think creatively, be flexible, and accomplish more with less.

Your Voice Matters

Every voice is valuable and we encourage our team to share opinions, concerns and ideas. No contribution is too small or insignificant. Be unafraid to give feedback and request feedback.

Ownership

As a new organization, recognize that you play a major role in shaping what this organization is and will become. Take pride in your work, take initiative with your team, and take your responsibilities seriously. Our progress is your progress. Our accomplishments are yours. Our challenges are yours. Step up and keep stepping up.

Intersectional Empowerment

We were founded with the intention of empowering women in STEM to believe that they are brilliant and their potential is boundless. Our presentations are delivered to classrooms of boys and girls because equity in STEM leadership will only be achieved when all genders are invested. Although we are focused on gender, we embrace the intersections between race, ethnicity, class, and religion.

Intentional Community Building

Recognize that earning trust takes time and commitment. Prioritize building meaningful relationships with community partners, staff, volunteers and mentors.

“Don’t let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity.”
