Don't Miss These Opportunities & Updates from Boundless Brilliance | November 2022

Expectations of Brilliance

In 2017, Boundless Brilliance was founded on a simple, powerful idea: STEM is for everyone. As we work with young students, we aim to assist them in recognizing their own brilliance, because we believe that there is no such thing as a “genius,” and that the difference in outcomes that we see is due to inequitable access to resources.

That is why we wanted to share this article, Expectations of Brilliance Underlie Gender Distributions Across Academic Disciplines, published by collaborating researchers and psychologists. This article describes how beliefs in innate abilities based on gender or race impact the STEM workforce.

Here is an excerpt from the article:
"We hypothesize that, across the academic spectrum, women are underrepresented in fields whose practitioners believe that raw, innate talent is the main requirement for success, because women are stereotyped as not possessing such talent. This hypothesis extends to African Americans' underrepresentation as well, as this group is subject to similar stereotypes."

Andrei Cimpian

“It's an uncomfortable thought, but our society still sees genius as a male trait. This means that many young women are still not seen as smart enough for ‘genius fields’ such as those in STEM. This is why organizations like Boundless Brilliance are essential: By addressing gender stereotypes early in development, Boundless Brilliance makes it easier for girls to imagine a future in STEM and to persist even when others put up obstacles in their way.”

Serina Hartwell

“To be quietly brilliant is to give to the world.”

Lauryn Hill

"In my travels all over the world, I have come to realize that what distinguishes one child from another is not ability, but access. Access to education, access to opportunity, access to love."
